Recife celebrates 20 years of Orquestra Criança Cidadã project
Recife’s historic Teatro de Santa Isabel hosted concerts on 24‑25 July 2026 to mark the 20‑year anniversary of the Orquestra Criança Cidadã, a social‑musical program founded on 25 July 2006. The project provides housing, daily meals and musical training to children from the Coque neighbourhood, a district with the lowest Human Development Index in the city. After a 2009 storm destroyed the family’s home, the initiative helped rebuild a new residence.
The concerts were attended by Ivone dos Santos, 57, the mother of violist Isaías Tavares, 33, who is now principal violist of the Orquestra Sinfônica de Goiânia after studying in Austria. Ivone was accompanied by her husband Damião Ferreira, 61. Former participant Antonino Tertuliano, the only Latin‑American member of the Duisburg Philharmonic in Germany, also highlighted the programme’s impact.
Since its inception, the Orquestra Criança Cidadã has supported roughly 1 500 young musicians, offering not only artistic training but also meals and housing support, demonstrating the transformative power of music in disadvantaged communities.
