Orsara di Puglia farmer killed in tractor accident
A 52-year-old farmer, Pasquale Maffia, died in Orsara di Puglia, Foggia, after being crushed by his tractor while plowing a family field. Preliminary reports suggest the vehicle overturned, possibly due to the steep terrain. Emergency responders, including medical personnel from Troia and Bovino and a helicopter, arrived at the scene but could not revive him.
The municipality of Orsara di Puglia has declared a period of mourning following the incident. The Manta Group, a local company where Maffia worked for nearly thirty years, released a statement honoring his long-term commitment and contribution to the firm.
In response to the tragedy, Federacma, the federation of national associations for agricultural, operating, and gardening machinery, has called for the implementation of mandatory periodic inspections for agricultural vehicles. Federacma president Andrea Borio noted that tractor rollovers remain a significant cause of death in Italian countryside, claiming over one hundred victims annually, and argued that agricultural machinery should be subject to the same safety verification standards as cars and trucks.
