Orthodontic care trends show growth in adult patients and early intervention

Modern orthodontic care is expanding beyond teenage patients to include a growing demographic of adults and early intervention for children. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, adults over 18 now represent nearly one-third of all orthodontic patients, seeking treatment for aesthetic improvements, correcting previous relapse, or preparing for restorative dental work.

Experts, including Shankar Venugopalan of the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, highlight that ages 8 to 9 serve as a critical checkpoint for evaluating tooth development and identifying issues like crowding or crossbites. Early intervention can prevent complications such as gum recession and bone loss.

Technological advancements, such as digital 3D scans and clear aligners, have improved patient experiences. While clear aligners offer a more discreet option, their success is highly dependent on patient compliance, requiring wear for more than 20 hours a day. Successful orthodontic outcomes also require long-term maintenance through the use of retainers.
