Orthodox Church commemorates Apostle Thaddeus and various martyrs

The Orthodox Church commemorates several religious figures in late August. On August 21, the Church honors the memory of the Apostle Thaddeus, who is traditionally associated with missionary work in Edessa, Syria, and Beirut. He is often distinguished from Jude Thaddeus, one of the Twelve Apostles, in ecclesiastical traditions. The day also honors the martyrs Bassa and her children, who suffered during the persecutions of Emperor Maximian.

On August 22, the Church commemorates the martyrs Agathonikos and Theoprepia, along with several companions including Zotikos, Zenon, Akindynos, and Sebirianos. These figures were persecuted during the reign of Maximian. The commemorations include historical accounts of their trials and martyrdoms, such as Agathonikos being executed in Sillyon, Thrace, after being arrested in Nicomedia.
