Orthodox Church clarifies rules for black cross days

In the Orthodox calendar, different symbols are used to denote the liturgical importance of various holidays. A red cross typically marks major feast days, such as Easter or Christmas, or days dedicated to particularly significant saints. On these major holidays, believers are encouraged to prioritize prayer, church services, and rest, often avoiding heavy household chores.

In contrast, a black cross marks holidays of a lower rank, such as those dedicated to lesser-known saints or martyrs. There is no ecclesiastical prohibition against performing household tasks, including washing laundry, on days marked with a black cross. While some folk traditions suggest avoiding physical labor on feast days, the Church does not forbid such activities. However, if a black cross day falls on a Wednesday or Friday, fasting regulations must still be observed.
