Orthodox Church commemorates martyrs Marcian and Martirius
The Orthodox Church observes the feast day of the holy martyrs Marcian and Martirius on October 25. The two men, a reader and a subdeacon from Constantinople, lived during the 4th century under the reign of Emperor Constantius.
During a period of intense persecution against those upholding the Nicene Creed, Marcian and Martirius served as secretaries to Patriarch Paul the Confessor. They remained steadfast in their defense of the divinity of Jesus Christ against the spread of Arianism. Despite being offered wealth and high ecclesiastical positions to convert to Arianism, they refused the bribes. Consequently, they were sentenced to death and beheaded around 355 AD.
The commemoration is also associated with traditional folk beliefs regarding family peace, mercy, and seasonal transitions. In Bulgarian tradition, the day serves as a reminder to avoid conflict and stinginess, emphasizing the importance of showing compassion to those in need.
