Saint Athanogenes commemorated on July 16 in Orthodox calendar

On July 16 the Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Athanogenes, a bishop from Sevastia in Cappadocia who was martyred during the Diocletian persecutions, together with his ten disciples. The saints are remembered for their education, charitable work and steadfast confession of Christ, which led to their arrest by the governor Phylimarchos and eventual beheading. The liturgical observance also includes Saint Faustus and the 15,000 martyrs of Pisidia, and a traditional evening hymn praising Athanogenes as “the joyful light of holy glory.” The commemoration appears in Greek and Romanian Orthodox calendars and is noted in several church‑related publications.
