Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Luke and Saint Zlata Maglenska
The Orthodox Church observes the feast days of Saint Luke the Evangelist and the Great Martyr Zlata Maglenska on October 18.
Saint Luke, an evangelist and author of the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles, is traditionally recognized as a physician and a companion to Saint Paul. He is venerated as a patron of doctors and is credited in tradition with establishing early Christian iconography.
Saint Zlata Maglenska was a Bulgarian martyr who lived during the 18th-century Ottoman rule. Born into a poor family in the village of Slatino, she is honored for refusing to renounce her Christian faith despite abduction and severe torture. She died a martyr's death on October 18, 1795.
In addition to religious observances, folk tradition suggests cleaning and polishing gold jewelry on this day to bring health and good fortune, a custom linked to the name Zlata.
