Saint Petka feast day observed by Orthodox believers

Orthodox Christians are celebrating the feast day of Saint Paraskevi, widely known as Saint Petka, on October 27. Recognized as a protector of women, children, the sick, and the poor, the saint holds significant cultural and spiritual importance in Southeast Europe.

Traditions surrounding the holiday include visiting holy springs, such as those at Kalemegdan Fortress in Belgrade, Rakovica monastery, and sites in Paraćin, Železnik, and Vinča. Many believers seek the medicinal properties of water from these springs to treat ailments like eye diseases and headaches.

Customs dictate that the eve of the holiday should be spent in prayer and peace. Traditional folk beliefs advise against performing heavy household chores, such as sewing, knitting, or washing laundry, particularly for women, to show respect to the saint. Some traditions also suggest avoiding conflict and practicing forgiveness to ensure spiritual healing and domestic peace.
