Romania’s August Orthodox Feasts and Transylvanian Cultural Events
The Romanian Orthodox calendar marks three red‑cross holidays in August: Schimbarea la Față (the Transfiguration) on 6 August, Adormirea Maicii Domnului (the Dormition of the Mother of God) on 15 August, and Tăierea Capului Sfântului Ioan Botezătorul (the Beheading of St John the Baptist) on 29 August. Traditional superstitions advise against bathing in rivers, arguing, or women washing hair on 6 August, and prescribe specific prayers for protection and fertility.
In addition to religious observances, the Transylvanian hills host more than 20 cultural and gastronomic events throughout August, including the Tuberozelor Festival, Transylvanian Brunch, Haferland Week, ICon Arts, and a bike‑trail race, drawing visitors to Sibiu, Brașov and Mureș counties.
July commemorations featured in the Orthodox calendar include Saint Calinic (29 July) and Saint Valentin (30 July), both honored as martyrs and healers. These saints are invoked for healing, family unity and steadfast faith.
