Orthodox Church marks saints Meletius and others on May 24 and celebrates John the Baptist’s head on May 25

On May 24, the Orthodox Church honors Saint Meletius the Soldier, a 2nd‑century Roman officer who was martyred for his faith, together with the martyrs Marcia and Palladia. The day also includes the liturgical celebration of several personal name days such as Φωτεινή, Φάη, and others.

On May 25, the Church commemorates the “Third Finding” of the holy head of John the Baptist, an event dating to around 850 AD when the relic was rediscovered in Cappadocia and later transferred to Constantinople. The feast also honors the martyr saints Celestine and Pagharion and the ascetic Saint Olbian.

Both days are observed in the Orthodox liturgical calendar with special prayers and services.
