Orthodox Churches Mark Saint Sisoje Day, Honoring Children’s Protector

The Serbian Orthodox Church and the Macedonian Orthodox Church observed the feast of Saint Sisoje (Sisoje Veliki), a saint revered as the protector of children. The day is marked by a traditional seven‑day fast undertaken by many mothers before the feast, intended to bring health and good fortune to their children. Folk belief holds that rain on the day is holy water sent by the saint, and that children may stay outdoors at night because demons are said to flee.

Saint Sisoje, originally from Egypt and a disciple of Saint Anthony, is remembered for his ascetic life, healing powers, and ability to expel evil spirits. His relics are kept in the Monastery of Saint Vasilije Ostroški in Bijeljina, and his legacy continues to shape local customs and prayers across the region.
