Orthodox Gospojinski fast emphasizes spiritual discipline over dietary changes

The Gospojinski fast, one of the strictest periods in the Orthodox calendar leading up to the Dormition of the Mother of God, focuses on spiritual transformation rather than mere dietary changes.

Religious figures emphasize that physical abstinence from meat, milk, and eggs loses its purpose without spiritual discipline. Key pitfalls identified include pride, where believers may feel superior to others, and gluttony, which occurs when fasting meals are replaced by excessive amounts of processed or fatty foods.

Father Ljubomir Ranković highlights the sin of excessive speech and harmful words as a significant spiritual failure. He notes that controlling one's tongue is a greater feat than fasting on bread and water alone, as the tongue can become a source of hatred and division. The fast is intended as a time for prayer, forgiveness, and inner cleansing.
