Orthodox teachings focus on mercy and the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant

The Orthodox Church observes the 11th Sunday after Pentecost, focusing on the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant from the Gospel of Matthew (18:23-35). The parable describes a master who forgives a massive debt owed by a servant, only for that same servant to refuse mercy to a fellow servant over a much smaller amount.

The teachings emphasize that spiritual maturity involves moving beyond a strict logic of justice and accounting. While the debtor was technically correct in demanding what was owed, the tragedy lies in his inability to extend the same mercy he received. The readings suggest that true spirituality begins when an individual is capable of renouncing their legal rights for a greater good, as illustrated by Saint Paul’s discourse on his own rights in 1 Corinthians 9:2-12.
