Orthodox teachings focus on the commandment to love enemies

Reflections on the 19th Sunday after Pentecost in the Orthodox Church focus on the biblical commandment to “love your enemies,” as recorded in the Gospel of Luke (6:31–36). The teachings emphasize that Christian love is not merely a response to being loved, but a transformative act that does not depend on reciprocity.

These religious teachings clarify that loving enemies does not mean approving of injustice, lies, or violence, nor does it require abandoning truth or justice. Instead, it encourages rejecting an evil act without hating the person who committed it. The practice is presented as a way to transform one's relationship with those who cause harm, viewing every person as bearing the image of God despite the presence of sin.
