Orthodox traditions behind Wednesday and Friday fasting

In Orthodox Christian tradition, fasting on Wednesdays and Fridays serves specific symbolic purposes related to the life of Jesus Christ. Wednesday is observed to commemorate the day Judas Iscariot agreed to betray Christ to Jewish leaders. Friday is observed to remember the crucifixion and death of Jesus on Golgotha.

Sunday is excluded from regular fasting because it is regarded as 'Little Pascha,' a day of joy celebrating the Resurrection. While fasting is often associated with dietary restrictions, the tradition emphasizes a broader spiritual meaning, including prayer, forgiveness, humility, and self-improvement.
