Orthodox traditions detail miraculous icons of Panagia Eleousa and Panagia Vimatissa

Historical and religious accounts detail the significance of two notable Orthodox icons.

The icon of Panagia Eleousa in Patmos, painted in 1763 by the deacon Athanasios of Crete, is noted for being the only icon depicting the Virgin Mary with three eyes following a reported miracle.

In the Vatopedi Monastery, the icon of Panagia Vimatissa (or Ktitorissa) is associated with a legendary miracle. During an Arab raid, a deacon named Savvas hid the icon, a cross, and a lit lamp in the monastery's well. Seventy years later, after Crete was liberated, the items were recovered from the well; the icon and cross were found standing upright on the water, and the lamp was reportedly still burning.
