Saint Petka feast day traditions and significance in the Balkans

Orthodox believers across the Balkans observe the feast day of Saint Petka Epivatska, also known as Petkovden. The celebration honors the 11th-century saint, who is traditionally regarded as a protector of women, mothers, and children.

In many regions, such as North Macedonia, the holiday is observed according to the Julian calendar, placing the date on October 27. While it is a significant religious event marked by prayer and spiritual reflection, it is not a public holiday or a non-working day.

Traditional customs associated with the day include avoiding strenuous physical labor, sewing, or washing clothes. Many families celebrate with a festive meal and host guests. Devotees often visit holy springs and fountains dedicated to the saint, believing the water provides spiritual comfort and blessings. The saint's relics are currently housed in the Metropolitan Cathedral in Iași, Romania.
