Orthopaedic issues rising among younger populations in Fiji and India
Medical professionals are observing a rising trend of orthopaedic issues and joint replacement requirements among younger populations in Fiji and India. Traditionally viewed as ailments of the elderly, conditions such as osteoarthritis are increasingly affecting younger individuals due to several lifestyle factors.
In Fiji, specialists note that obesity, sports injuries, road accidents, and previous joint damage are primary drivers. Dr. Vaigalo Eddie McCaig of Pacific Specialist Healthcare highlighted that changing lifestyles and increasing body weight in the Pacific region are contributing to these problems. He emphasized that surgery should be a last resort based on quality of life rather than X-ray results alone.
Similarly, in India, clinical research suggests that sedentary lifestyles, extended screen time, improper posture, and obesity are causing knee, back, neck, and shoulder ailments before middle age. Factors such as working from home, prolonged smartphone use, and improper exercise techniques are cited as significant contributors to decreased muscle strength and joint mobility.
