Orthopaedic studies examine joint loading and fracture treatments
Recent orthopaedic research from Austria explores surgical interventions for joint instability and bone fractures.
A musculoskeletal simulation study investigated the impact of femoral derotation osteotomy (FDO) on patients with patellofemoral instability. Using personalized in-silico modeling on 16 participants with high femoral version, the study found that while FDO significantly altered superior-inferior and anterior-posterior patellofemoral joint contact forces, it did not significantly change medio-lateral loading at the group level.
In a separate comparative study conducted at Kepler Universitätsklinikum Linz, researchers evaluated treatment options for proximal humerus fractures in patients over 65. The study compared clinical outcomes between osteosynthesis (using angle-stable plates) and prosthetic care (inverse shoulder prosthesis) in 226 patients. The research noted differences in patient demographics and fracture complexity between the two treatment groups.
