Oruç Reis conducts maritime research for planned gas pipeline

The Turkish research vessel Oruç Reis is conducting active maritime research in the waters between Anamur, Turkey, and occupied Kyrenia, Cyprus. Operating under a NAVTEX valid until October 25, the vessel is moving at low speeds of 2 to 4 knots and is accompanied by three support ships, indicating an organized operation rather than a simple transit.

The research is focused on the planned Anamur–Teknecik natural gas pipeline. This project aims to transport gas from Turkey to the occupied territories to support electricity production and reduce reliance on liquid fuels. The proposed 101-kilometer pipeline is designed to allow bidirectional flow, potentially enabling gas from the Eastern Mediterranean to be sent to Turkey in the future.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, as there are concerns the vessel may move westward toward maritime zones of interest to Greece between October 12 and 23. Technical studies for the pipeline project are expected to conclude in 2026, with operations targeted for 2028.
