Oruro institutions defend the origin of the Morenada dance

Authorities and cultural institutions in Oruro, Bolivia, are actively defending the city's claim as the origin of the Morenada dance. This movement comes in response to legislative initiatives seeking to recognize other municipalities, such as Guaqui, as the folkloric capital of the dance.

Rolando Barrientos, the departmental Secretary of Culture and Tourism, emphasized that the Morenada is an essential part of the Carnaval de Oruro, which is recognized as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Local officials noted that Oruro possesses centennial dance groups and researchers that support its historical connection to the tradition.

In conjunction with these efforts, Oruro is commemorating the National Day of the Morenada on September 7. The date honors the Oruro-born composer and researcher José Flores Orozco, known as ‘Jach’a Flores’. The celebrations include parades by seven major fraternities, musical performances, and cultural exhibitions to promote the preservation and evolution of the dance.
