Oruro livestock face heavy losses following severe snowstorms

Severe snowstorms and extreme temperatures in the Oruro department of Bolivia have caused significant livestock losses. In the municipality of Toledo, Mayor Noel Gonzales confirmed the death of improved sheep offspring and other vulnerable animals. The weather event has exacerbated a pre-existing crisis caused by prolonged drought and a lack of forage.

In addition to the climate emergency, producers in Toledo are facing attacks from packs of 20 to 25 dogs, which have further killed sheep and camelids. Local authorities have requested urgent assistance, including food, vitamins, and medicine, to prevent further losses in this key livestock-producing region.

In Curahuara de Carangas, the Risk Management Unit reported the death of camelid livestock following intense snowfall that began on August 23. Authorities are currently assessing the impact on grazing areas, forage reserves, and road transitability. The Association of Municipalities of Oruro (Amdeor) is gathering technical data to prepare official emergency reports as weather forecasts suggest the storm conditions may persist.
