Oruro promotes Charquekán gastronomy through new bill and festival

Authorities in Oruro, Bolivia, are advancing legislative and cultural initiatives to promote the region's traditional gastronomy. Bill No. 671/2025-2026 has been presented to declare October 6 as the National Day of Charque and Charquekán Orureño. The proposal aims to institutionalize local culinary traditions and position Oruro as a gastronomic reference in the Andean region.

In conjunction with these legislative efforts, the Government of Oruro has announced the official launch of the “World's Longest Charquekán” event, scheduled for August 26. This initiative seeks to boost local production and tourism. Last year, the festival featured a 251-meter dish, and organizers intend to surpass that length this year. Charquekán is a traditional Bolivian dish with pre-Columbian origins, characterized by its unique preparation using local ingredients.
