Oruro urban teachers declare emergency over new education law

The Federation of Urban Teachers of Oruro has declared a state of emergency in response to a proposed new Educational Law. The union is threatening pressure measures to protest the inclusion of a “free profession” clause, which they claim would allow professionals from other fields to enter the teaching workforce without specific pedagogical training.

Milena Colque, executive of the urban teaching sector, criticized the lack of consultation with base teachers and union organizations during the drafting of the new regulations. The federation expressed concerns that the reforms could undermine established teacher rights, the professional career ladder (escalafón), and general working conditions. The group is currently preparing to convene its members to define future actions once the current state of exception concludes.
