Italy faces regional water shortages and urban management updates

Various regions in Italy are facing significant environmental and infrastructural challenges. In Veneto, rainfall deficits have reached 24% since the start of the year, causing river flows to drop significantly and prompting irrigation rationing by the Piave Reclamation Consortium.

In Basilicata, a 1.1 million euro contract has been awarded to upgrade the meteorological and hydrological monitoring network for several major dams to better manage water resources amid changing rainfall patterns. Meanwhile, in Agrigento, Sicily, residents face ongoing water shortages, leading to localized protests over the lack of supply.

Several municipalities are implementing new technology to manage urban issues. Pescara is expanding its video surveillance and using mobile camera traps to combat illegal waste dumping. Orvieto is also installing new surveillance cameras and license plate readers to enhance security. In Foligno, the mayor is responding to noise complaints with plans for advanced AI-equipped cameras.

In the sports sector, both Livorno and Pisa have announced traffic restrictions (ZTL) around their respective stadiums to manage vehicle flow during upcoming matches in the 2026-2027 season.
