Osagyefo Power Barge Centre to become Ghana prison school
The Osagyefo Power Barge Centre in Effasu Mangyea, located within the Jomoro Municipality of Ghana's Western Region, is slated for conversion into a prison school for the Ghana Prisons Service (GPS).
This initiative is a collaborative effort between Jomoro Member of Parliament Dorcas Affo-Toffey and Municipal Chief Executive Benedict Boadi. The goal is to repurpose the facility for inmate education, skills development, and rehabilitation to aid reintegration into society.
The site was originally part of a power barge project intended to supply electricity to the Western Region. However, the project became controversial after approximately 90 per cent of the barge was dismantled without authorization. Following a 2015 directive from the Ministry of Energy, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) was to take ownership of the barge.
Representatives from the Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Police Service, and the Jomoro Municipal Assembly have visited the site to assess its suitability for the proposed educational institution.
