Osaka and Tokyo rank in top 10 of Global Liveability Index

In the 2026 Global Liveability Index published by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), Osaka and Tokyo emerged as the only Asian cities to rank in the top ten. Osaka secured 7th place, maintaining its position from the previous year, while Tokyo ranked 10th.

Both cities achieved perfect scores of 100 out of 100 in the categories of stability, healthcare, and education. Tokyo received lower scores in culture and environment (89) and infrastructure (93). The index evaluates 173 cities based on 30 indicators across five weighted categories: stability and culture/environment (25% each), healthcare and infrastructure (20% each), and education (10%).

The ranking, which measures living conditions rather than the cost of living, saw Copenhagen take first place for the second consecutive year. While the results highlight Japan's high standards in specific sectors, some observers have noted that the index's criteria can be subjective when comparing diverse urban scales and economic conditions.
