Osaka athletes barred from national meet after registration error

Eight junior high school athletes from Osaka have been barred from competing in the JOC Junior Olympic Cup U16 Athletics Championships due to a registration error by the Osaka Junior High School Physical Education Federation. Although the athletes earned their spots as regional representatives, the federation failed to complete the online application process before the deadline.

The Japan Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF) denied requests for relief, citing fairness. JAAF reported that system logs showed the federation first logged into the entry system just one minute before the September 24 deadline. The association stated that granting an exception would create issues regarding equity for other competitors.

Osaka Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura issued a formal request to the JAAF to allow the students to participate, arguing that the children bear no responsibility for the administrative mistake. Yoshimura expressed a desire to provide the students with the opportunity to challenge themselves after their hard work. The incident has sparked debate on social media between those advocating for strict adherence to rules and those arguing that children should not suffer for adult errors.
