Osaka danjiri festivals leave two dead and 16 injured

Two people have died and 16 others were injured during traditional danjiri float festivals in Osaka Prefecture, Japan. The accidents occurred when massive wooden structures, some weighing several tons and reaching four meters in height, overturned while performing high-speed turns in narrow streets.

The first fatal incident took place in Izumisano around 11:00 AM, when a float collapsed during a right-hand turn. A 51-year-old man died from his injuries after being transported to a hospital. Seven other participants were injured in this incident.

Approximately two hours later, a similar accident occurred in Izumiotsu. A 48-year-old office worker died after being pinned under a float that lost balance while attempting a turn. Nine additional participants received medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities indicate that both accidents were triggered by the ‘yarimawashi’ maneuver, a high-speed technique used to navigate right-angle turns. The fatalities involved individuals in the ‘takari’ role, who stand on the sides of the floats to help stabilize them. The incidents have reignited debates regarding festival safety and whether these high-risk traditions should be abolished or modified.
