Osaka junior athletes barred from national competition due to entry error
Eight junior athletes from Osaka have been barred from competing in the JOC Junior Olympic Cup U16 Athletics competition due to an administrative error by the Osaka Junior High School Physical Education Federation. The federation admitted that the person in charge of entries mistakenly believed the deadline was September 28 rather than September 24. By the time the error was discovered during a meeting on the deadline day, the registration portal had already closed.
The Japan Association of Athletics Federations has declined to grant any relief or allow late entries, citing the need to maintain fairness and consistency with previous rulings. This decision has sparked significant backlash from parents and athletes. Some affected competitors expressed deep frustration, noting that for some, this was their final opportunity to compete in the U16 category.
Osaka Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura commented on the situation, questioning why the athletes should bear the consequences of an adult error. While the Osaka Junior High School Physical Education Federation has issued apologies to the families, many parents remain dissatisfied, seeking more accountability and a way to salvage the opportunities lost by the children.
