Osaka Memorial Park's Takeda‑style Kofun Tomb Draws 1,000 Attendees

Osaka Memorial Park in Daito City, Osaka Prefecture, announced that its "Takeda‑style Kofun Tomb" project has held explanation sessions attended by a cumulative total of more than 1,000 participants. The sessions, scheduled for 5 September, allow families facing grave inheritance or closure issues to learn about the concept, costs and cultural background of the new memorial option.

The project, a collaboration between Osaka Memorial Park Sales Co. (led by Koichi Higuchi) and Kabira Kofun Co., revives the ancient kofun form as a modern "eternal burial" space. Designed with input from architect Tadao Ando’s research institute, the site sits on a ridge of the Ikoma Mountains, offering panoramic views of the Osaka plain to Awaji Island. It is also listed as a furusato‑tax return gift for Daito City, linking regional contribution with the memorial service.

By presenting an alternative to traditional graves, the initiative aims to address Japan’s declining numbers of heirs for family tombs and provide a contemporary place of remembrance.
