Osaka student athletes barred from national track meet due to entry error
Eight junior athletes from Osaka will be unable to participate in the JOC Junior Olympic Cup U16 Athletics Championships in Mie Prefecture after the Osaka Junior High School Physical Education Federation (Osaka Chutairen) withdrew its emergency arbitration request.
The exclusion resulted from a clerical error where a staff member misidentified the entry deadline for the prefectural representative events. The deadline was September 24, but the staff member believed it was September 28. Although the error was discovered minutes before the deadline, the registration window had already closed.
Osaka Chutairen had filed for emergency arbitration with the Japan Sport Arbitration Agency (JSAA) to seek permission for additional entries. However, the federation withdrew the request following discussions with the athletes' parents, stating they prioritized the mental and physical well-being of the children over a prolonged legal process.
The Japan Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF) previously declined the request for an exception, citing concerns regarding fairness in future competitions. Both organizations have pledged to implement measures to prevent recurrence. The JAAF is considering alternative responses for the affected athletes, while Osaka Chutairen is exploring options such as organizing substitute competitions.
