Osaze Odemwingie recalls Nigeria's 2008 Olympic kit crisis
Former Nigerian striker Osaze Odemwingie has recounted a logistical crisis faced by the Nigeria U-23 football team during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Due to administrative errors, federation officials reportedly shipped the team’s primary playing kits back to Nigeria, anticipating an early exit from the tournament.
As the squad unexpectedly advanced through the group stages and into the knockout rounds, they faced a severe shortage of matchday apparel. Odemwingie revealed that the players were forced to use kits belonging to the women’s national team, the Super Falcons, to compete in the later stages of the competition. The shortage was notable enough that players from the United States team reportedly teased the Nigerians about wearing the same attire repeatedly, leading some players to purchase plain white T-shirts to supplement their gear.
Despite these challenges, the team managed a successful campaign under manager Samson Siasia. After defeating Belgium 4-1 in the semi-finals, Nigeria reached the gold-medal match, where they ultimately lost 1-0 to Argentina, securing the silver medal.
