Osborne expects millions in losses due to African swine fever
Osborne, the producer of Cinco Jotas Iberian ham, anticipates international sales losses between two and three million euros due to African swine fever (ASF) restrictions. CEO Fernando Terry announced that trade barriers imposed by key markets, specifically Mexico and Japan, are hindering exports and compromising growth expectations.
The crisis stems from the detection of the virus in wild boar in Catalonia in late November 2025. While the virus has not reached domestic livestock farms, the resulting trade restrictions have significantly impacted the Spanish meat sector. According to ANICE, sector shipments to Japan and Mexico fell by approximately 350 million euros during the first half of 2026.
Terry emphasized the complexity of the situation, noting that even after the disease is eradicated, it could take up to two years to resume normal export levels. He urged the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture and the Generalitat of Catalonia to maintain strict control measures to prevent further spread.
