Oscar Herrera Ahuad warns land law reform threatens Misiones

National deputy Oscar Herrera Ahuad, representing Misiones, addressed the Chamber of Deputies' Commission on Agriculture and Regional Development, condemning the government's proposed Rural Land Law. He argued the bill, aimed at liberalising land sales, would jeopardise the province's 500,000 rural inhabitants who live on small family farms ranging from 1 to 22 hectares.

Herrera Ahuad warned that purchasing 100 hectares could displace dozens of families and destabilise Misiones' economy, which relies heavily on yerba mate production. He described the timing as a "perfect storm" for the region, noting the ongoing crisis in the agricultural sector and the risk of land concentration and foreign ownership, especially given the province's border with Brazil and Paraguay.
