Oscar Levis identified as Jewish Negro League pitcher

Extensive archival research and genealogical investigation have confirmed that Oscar Levis, a legendary Negro League pitcher, was Jewish. Levis, who was known early in his career as ‘Chick Levy’ and later as ‘Oscal’, was a dominant force in the Negro Leagues and the Cuban Winter League. His career included pitching a no-hitter and achieving five consecutive seasons without a loss against a prominent white semiprofessional club in the Northeast.

Researchers discovered that Levis was the son of Amos DaCosta Levy, a prominent Jewish merchant and civic leader in Jamaica. The revelation corrects a historical oversight caused by the fact that the Negro Leagues were not officially recognized as major professional leagues until 2020, and the prevailing historical assumption that Black and Jewish identities rarely overlapped.

Levis’s heritage reflects the complex cultural dynamics of the Caribbean Sephardic community. His father, whose roots traced from Portugal through the Caribbean to Jamaica, married Theodosia Foreman, a Black Jamaican woman. This discovery necessitates a rewrite of Jewish baseball history, as Levis had previously been omitted from official rosters of Jewish major leaguers.
