Óscar Morales López detained and released in Caracas following political prisoner protest
Human rights activist Óscar Morales López was detained in Caracas on September 12, 2026, after participating in a protest near Miraflores Palace demanding the release of political prisoners. Witnesses reported that Morales was intercepted by unidentified individuals in a white vehicle without license plates in the La Candelaria district. He was subsequently held for several hours at the National Bolivarian Police (PNB) headquarters in Maripérez.
During his detention, Morales reported being hooded and interrogated regarding his activism and the funding of his activities. He was also briefly accused of illegal possession of a weapon, a charge that was later dropped. Morales was released later that day following public pressure and intervention by legal representatives and human rights organizations.
This incident has intensified calls for justice from families of political detainees. The Alliance for the Freedom of Political Prisoners and the Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners (Clippve) have denounced the event as part of a pattern of arbitrary detentions and political repression. Organizations such as Foro Penal estimate that there are between 328 and 400 political prisoners currently held in Venezuela, prompting ongoing protests and vigils in Caracas to demand judicial transparency and the release of detainees.
