Oscar Parrilli claims UN will restore Cristina Kirchner’s political rights

Peronist leader Oscar Parrilli has expressed confidence that the United Nations will intervene to secure the release of former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and restore her eligibility for political office. During a political tour in Chaco, Parrilli stated that he expects an international ruling by October that would overturn her current legal restrictions.

Fernández de Kirchner is currently serving house arrest following a conviction for corruption in the ‘Causa Vialidad’ case, which also included a lifetime ban from holding public office. Parrilli and her legal team have filed a recourse with the United Nations Human Rights Committee, alleging that her trial violated procedural guarantees and was characterized by political persecution and a ‘sexist judicial system.’

Parrilli characterized the current state of Argentine democracy as ‘failed’ and ‘incomplete,’ arguing that the judiciary is being used to enforce a ‘political proscription’ against the former president to remove her from the political arena.
