Oscar Piastri faces performance challenges following 2025 victory

Oscar Piastri has faced a challenging period in Formula 1, marking over a year since his victory at the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort. Following that win, which established a 34-point championship lead over teammate Lando Norris, Piastri has struggled to secure further Grand Prix victories during the 2026 season.

Technical and competitive factors have contributed to this decline. Piastri has struggled with the McLaren MCL40, particularly on low-grip circuits where his driving style causes rear tire temperature spikes. In contrast, Lando Norris has demonstrated greater flexibility with a driving style that better manages the car's rotation. This performance gap is reflected in qualifying statistics, where Norris holds a significant advantage over Piastri.

Internal team dynamics and external conditions have also played a role. Controversies regarding the ‘Papaya Rules’ and team instructions have surfaced, alongside difficulties navigating specific track conditions in Baku, Austin, and Mexico City. Despite the introduction of new regulations for 2026 intended to reset the field, Piastri has found it difficult to regain his previous form.
