Oscar Piastri flags McLaren doubts ahead of Barcelona GP

McLaren driver Oscar Piastri said the team is still searching for explanations after difficult outings in Monaco and Canada and hopes the upcoming Barcelona Grand Prix will reveal whether the problems are structural. He qualified seventh for the race and noted that while McLaren can match Mercedes and Ferrari over a single lap, the rivals appear stronger on longer runs, especially on the straights. Piastri warned that catching the top teams will be "tough" and that the race will test the car’s down‑force and tyre performance.

Piastri also criticised the FIA’s decision to overturn Pierre Gasly’s penalty from the Monaco race, describing it as a troubling precedent that could encourage teams to seek post‑race reversals of penalties. He argued that such moves undermine consistency in rule‑enforcement and could affect future incidents, including George Russell’s penalty. The Australian driver stressed the uncertainty surrounding the car’s performance and the regulatory environment as the team prepares for the European round.
