Madrid Grand Prix draws driver criticism over lack of action
The inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at the new Madrid circuit has drawn heavy criticism from Formula 1 drivers due to a lack of overtaking opportunities and a monotonous racing flow. Drivers, including Gabriel Bortoleto and Kimi Antonelli, described the event as boring, with Bortoleto noting he ‘almost fell asleep’ due to the difficulty of making moves on the layout.
Oscar Piastri faced a particularly difficult race, finishing eighth after sustaining front-wing damage following contact with George Russell on the opening lap. The incident left Piastri struggling with car handling, and he later received a rare black-and-white flag from the FIA for repeatedly exceeding track limits while attempting to recover position.
Other notable incidents included a collision between Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc, which resulted in a ten-second penalty for Verstappen, and a clash between Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz. The circuit's design, characterized by narrow sections and limited run-off areas, has led to calls for layout changes to improve competitive racing.
