OSCE condemns violence in Albania and attacks on journalists

Claude Haagen, the Special Representative of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly for South East Europe, has expressed deep concern regarding recent developments and protests in Albania. Haagen emphasized the necessity of maintaining order while respecting fundamental freedoms, such as the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.

He called for accountability from all political actors, stating that violence has no place in a democratic society. Haagen urged that any acts of violence by protesters, as well as any excessive use of force by law enforcement, must be investigated in accordance with Albanian legislation and international human rights standards.

Furthermore, the representative highlighted the importance of media freedom, stressing that journalists must be able to report on public events without facing intimidation, harassment, or unjustified obstacles. He noted that a free and independent media is essential for transparency and informed public debate during periods of political tension.
