OSCE criticizes US for lack of invitation to midterm elections
The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) has criticized the United States for failing to extend an invitation to observe the upcoming midterm elections in November. This marks the first time since the OSCE began monitoring US federal elections in 2002 that the organization has not received an invitation to participate.
Pere Joan Pons, President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, described the decision as a “significant departure from an established democratic practice.” The OSCE noted that its observation missions typically provide independent assessments of legal and regulatory frameworks, which would have been valuable for this election cycle.
Historically, the OSCE has observed twelve federal elections in the US, including six midterm elections. While the organization has maintained long-standing cooperation with the country in the field of election observation, the White House has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the lack of an invitation.
