Oshkosh Defense and Michigan Tech partner on mobile power kit

Oshkosh Defense has entered a production partnership with Michigan Technological University’s Advanced Power Systems Research Center (APS LABS) to develop a Vehicle Integrated Power Kit (VIPK). The kit is designed for the Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles A2 (FMTV A2) to provide mobile, on-platform energy support in austere environments.

The VIPK can generate up to 120 kilowatts of power at 600 volts of direct current. This capability is intended to support critical battlefield operations, including counter-unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS), directed-energy weapon systems, missile defense, and field hospitals. The system is compliant with the Tactical Microgrid Standard (TMS), allowing for interoperability with other field power systems.

The partnership aims to transition the technology from a prototype to a scalable production-ready solution. This follows a $7.8 million contract awarded by the Army in February to APS LABS for an 18-month development project.
