Osiptel begins blocking 300,000 mobile phones in Peru

Osiptel, Peru's telecommunications regulator, has initiated a three-stage process to block 300,000 mobile phones during September. This measure targets devices that are not on the Renteseg (National Registry of Mobile Terminal Equipment for Security) white list and are linked to individuals previously associated with altered IMEI numbers.

The blocking process is scheduled in three installments of 100,000 devices each on September 15, 22, and 29. This initiative is part of a broader effort to combat the illegal trade of mobile equipment; since April 2025, approximately 5.3 million devices have been blocked.

Mobile operators are required to notify affected subscribers via SMS within two business days of receiving the block order. Users who disagree with the measure must register their equipment. Those with devices purchased locally should contact their seller to ensure Renteseg registration, while those with personal devices purchased abroad must contact their mobile service provider to request registration. Osiptel allows for the unblocking of devices if the owner can properly prove the legal origin of the equipment.
