OSIPTEL implements emergency mobile service protections in Peru
The Supervisory Agency for Private Investment in Telecommunications (OSIPTEL) has implemented extraordinary measures to ensure mobile service continuity in Peruvian regions affected by the El Niño 2026-2027 phenomenon. Under Resolution No. 133-2026-CD/OSIPTEL, these temporary provisions apply specifically to areas under official states of emergency.
For prepaid mobile users, the expiration of balances and promotions will be suspended. Operators are prohibited from canceling or suspending lines due to lack of recharge or inactivity. If technical limitations prevent this, companies may offer free SMS as an alternative.
For postpaid users, operators must temporarily migrate services to a prepaid modality instead of suspending or canceling lines due to non-payment, provided it is technically feasible. While this migration will not incur additional charges, existing debts incurred prior to the change remain valid. Additionally, operators may offer debt installment plans upon subscriber request and provide temporary prepaid lines for victims, which will be deactivated once the emergency period ends.
