Oskar Brüsewitz: 50 years since protest against GDR dictatorship
Fifty years after his death, the self-immolation of Pastor Oskar Brüsewitz is remembered as a significant act of protest against the SED dictatorship in East Germany. On August 18, 1976, Brüsewitz stood before the Michaeliskirche in Zeitz with a poster accusing the communist regime of suppressing children and youth in schools. He then doused himself in gasoline and set himself on fire.
Brüsewitz died from his injuries four days later at the age of 47. While the GDR leadership attempted to suppress information about the event to prevent him from becoming a martyr, hundreds of people attended his funeral in Rippicha. Former church official Manfred Stolpe later characterized Brüsewitz as a harbinger of the eventual system change in the GDR.
Though his motivations remain a subject of discussion among historians and contemporaries, his act is viewed as a precursor to the mass demonstrations that would eventually lead to the fall of the East German state in 1989.
