Oslo court sentences Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s son Marius Borg Høiby

On Monday morning, the Oslo District Court convened at 8:30 a.m. to announce the verdict in the high‑profile case of Marius Borg Høiby, the 29‑year‑old son of Crown Princess Mette‑Marit. Due to his health, Høiby attended the hearing via video link from Ila prison, where he has been held in pre‑trial detention.

The trial, which has dominated Norwegian media, involved more than 40 charges, including multiple counts of rape, domestic‑violence offences, breach of restraining orders and drug‑related incidents. The prosecution sought a custodial term of seven years and seven months, while the defence asked for a sentence of one and a half years. Judge Jon Sverdrup Efjestad will first read the concise verdict before delivering the full judgment, a procedure expected to last about ninety minutes. The identities of the victims will remain protected.

The case has placed the Norwegian royal family under intense scrutiny, with the sentencing marking a significant moment in the nation’s recent legal and royal history.
