Oslo introduces 'Oslometer' pilot to simplify outdoor seating for restaurants

Trondheim launched the "Trondheimmeteren" in February 2022, allowing cafés and restaurants to place tables up to one metre from their façade without additional fees. Bergen followed with a similar "Bergensmeteren". In August 2022 Oslo began testing its own version, the "Oslometeren", in the St. Hanshaugen district from 1 August to 31 October, with a plan to roll it out city‑wide by 2027.

The pilot is backed by NHO Reiseliv, whose serving‑industry head Tobias Strandskog‑Christensen said, "This is a simple and precise measure that can mean a lot, especially for small establishments." He added that the scheme could cut costs tied to permits and ground‑rent, while enabling more outdoor seats and higher turnover. Other Norwegian cities, including Stavanger and Kristiansand, are also considering similar pilots. The initiative aims to boost street life, reduce bureaucratic hurdles, and keep sidewalks clear for pedestrians, strollers and wheelchairs.
